The Raven and the Roses

We wrote these poems during a Reweaving Rights of Passage class.

[RAVEN]

[SMALL ROSE]

Obsidian eyes and black scaled toes
Hold the secret heart of the blood-petalled rose.

-- Phoenix Willow

[SMALL ROSE]

Raven hath feathers Dark
     and the Thorne is sharp
Upon the stems of the White
     Roses three.

Raven's blood drops crimson
     neither upon bud,
     nor blossom,
Staining petals of the third,
     fallen to Earth.

-- Raventhorne

[SMALL ROSE]

the glossy rainbow ripple of black feathers
spread in the freedom of flight
a breath . . .
a swoop

a sudden explosion of pink
a different kind of prey
     is trapped gently
in the grasp of a sharp beak
even the Raven is intoxicated
     by the luscious Romance of
          the Rose.

-- Peregrine

[SMALL ROSE]
White bird has kissed the dark
     and flown
To the land of all souls lying in wait
Her breath will serve to sing them on
To rise again on the wheel of fate
Or to let their scarlet petals
     softly fall

She sits in silent wonder.

-- Suzanne Sterling

[SMALL ROSE]
[7 Ravens Flying] Black Raven's bitter
cries sweet music
to my ears.

The fragrance of
the rose appears
with each
croaking call.

--Cynthia Breen
